Time for Lunch!

food, Svara

Every day around 11:30 I start thinking about lunch.  And about 3/4 of the time I end up making Svara her favorite lunch, put her down for her nap, and then Naren and I eat lunch together.  Sometimes I’ll make something for us all to eat, but for the most part it is the same thing for Svara every time.  And she never tires of it!  It is her noodle soup.  Here’s how I make it:

1 block of noodles (they come in squares, I use organic pumpkin noodles)

1/2 carrot, grated (I use organic)

2 tsp mild miso

2 cups water

I boil the water and add the carrots.  After a few minutes I add the noodles.  When the are done cooking I turn off the heat and add the miso.  Done!  Some days she’ll eat all of it, other days she’ll leave a bit.  But it’s a lot of food, I don’t know how she fits it all in her little tummy!  Sometimes I’ll add in soft tofu as well, or some cooked mashed lentils if I have them.  Many days it’s the only vegetable she will eat all day.  Since it’s a healthy meal I don’t mind that she eats it every day.   She loves it so much I do believe she’d eat it 3 times a day if I let her.  I wonder how soon she’d get tired of it if I did…

  • Some of her other favorite foods right now are:

watermelon popsicles

cereal (baby cereal mixed with soymilk, almond butter, ground flax, and mashed banana)

toast with jam

tosai (Indian crepe)

homemade vegan sausage

“cheese” sauce (homemade, made with nutritional yeast) with corn chips to dip

dry cereal (cornflakes, etc.)

pancakes with jam

  • Things she will eat, some more often than others:

bananas, apples, watermelon

tofu nuggets, veggie patties

raw carrots, salad

hummus, other bean dips

roasted chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds

banana bread, cookies, homemade bread/breadsticks

macaroni and “cheese” (homemade vegan cheezy sauce)

pasta (plain, or with vegan parmesan)

stir fried vegetables and tofu with rice

granola bars

homemade vegan icecream

baked french fries (made with regular or sweet potatoes)

peanut butter and honey sandwich

rice cake with honey

corn on the cob

homemade muffins/cupcakes

Svara will eat other things on occasion, but usually I end up choosing something from the list above to make for dinner.  If I make a veggie, mashed potatoes and gravy, and some type of veggie pattie Svara usually ends up eating some veggie pattie dipped in ketchup and maybe a bite of the vegetable (depending on what it is).  It would probably help if we made her sit down to every meal with us, but I would like to make sure she’s got at least one full meal a day, hence the noodle soup!

What does your toddler eat best?  Do you make them eat only what you are eating or do you make them special meals sometimes?

  1. Sounds like Svara is a great eater! Little Elvis is picky and gets pickier each day it seems. One day he will love, love, love something. The next week he won’t even tolerate it being in front of him. I’m convinced he would love corn, though I can’t for the life of me get him to try it. What’s not to love about corn? The only way we get veggies into his little body is for me to hide them in an old standby and hope he doesn’t notice!
